Dance Shoes: 5 big mistakes you should avoid

Buying dance shoes is super exciting but can be tricky.

Read all about the big mistakes you should avoid when buying shoes for dancing and how to find the perfect pair.

5 Mistakes when buying Dance Shoes

1. Shoes are too big

Naturally, dance shoes have to give a lot of support. You will jump in them, turn, slide and so much more.

Especially pointe shoes and ballroom or latin dance shoes make you shift your weight in the more unstable front part of the foot. Imagine now your shoes aren’t firm and move around the foot while you dance. This doesn’t only affect the quality of your dance, it can even make you fall and hurt yourself.

You want to make sure the shoes you are trying on sit very tightly. The size of dance shoes is often a smaller one than the one you have in normal shoes.

Specialized dance equipment shops can help you to choose the right size of shoes. Plus their selection is of high quality.

2. The prettiest dance shoes

Going for the prettiest shoes is very tempting. And I don’t say you shouldn’t follow your taste at all. But only because a dance shoe looks pretty from the outside, doesn’t mean it will be the right choice for you.

Every dancer has it’s strenghs and weaknesses. And also every foot shape is different. Keep in mind, that different brands and models of dance shoes adress different needs. Just like the Jeans of H&M fit differently than the ones from Zara.

There are shoes for more narrow feet, for wider feet, shoes which give more support and shoes which allow to be more flexible.

So don’t choose only from the looks, first of all adress your needs and you will dance like an angel.

3. Selecting by price

I know, dancing is already a very expensive activity to begin with. But you definetely do not want to save money on your most important gadget.

Even if it seems convenient to choose a more affordable pair of dance shoes, especially if you are a beginner: always put quality over price. Your feet will thank you for it in some months.

Good pair of shoes have a starting price of 70-80€ up to 150€. But with the right treatment you will be able to wear them for a longer period. So this money is well spent.

By the way, there are many ways how dancers can earn good money, even if dance is just your hobby!

4. Too difficult dance shoes

Dancing in heels is difficult, as well as dancing in pointe shoes. When you just started dancing you should be able to keep your focus on getting the steps right and discovering the technique.

But when your shoes make you struggel, it gets really diffucult to stay concentrated on your movements.

Don’t choose the highest heels or pointe shoes right after your first two weeks of dancing. Keep it comfortable and when you’re ready, you can always level up.

5. Buying dance shoes online

Online shopping is super comfortable, no doubt. But since we already established in point 1 to 4, that choosing dance shoes is super  personal, you probably already know that buying them without a try-on is not a good idea.

Unless you already have your favorit model and you simply want to rebuy them, it is better to go in a physical store with good service.

If you don’t know where to go, simply search for dance shoe stores in your region on Google Maps.
